Cranbrook Castle from Weeke Down 23/1/12
Watercolour
I've found myself fascinated by winter trees recently, in particular the way that massed winter trees look, so I've been playing around a lot with ways to capture this. Interestingly, the top watercolour took all of 10 minutes to do (and most of that was waiting for the paint to dry) while this stylised version below took about 3 hours, and was probably at least my fourth attempt at it!

Like em! My paintings take maybe a half hour to an hour, depending on size, maybe more if I go back in after everything has dried, but actually GETTING it in one is not necessarily a given. I must relinquish any attachment to the cost of watercolor paper and just keep making them. I can work a whole day, create 7 or 8 paintings, and maybe really like 1 or 2. Oils are much more forgiving of course, but I really have become more interested for the moment in the unknowns and mysteries of watercolor.
I like both of these - especially the contrast of the trees against the mist-filled valley in the first one. The 2nd reminds me of a dream-scene almost - lovely.
You have captured the rising mist so beautifully.
Beautiful paintings, great job.
The stylised trees below would make a nice card.
There is no media so atmospheric as water colour. I particularly love the first one, with the mist.
Wow I lOVe the bottom one of the trees! Three hours very well spent I think. We need to push our boundaries from time to time and this has definitely paid off!:)
